About
Heather
My name is Heather Cullen, and I have been a physical therapist for 29 years. I earned a Bachelor of Art in Psychology/Biology from Hamline University and a master’s in physical therapy from The College of St. Catherine. After graduating, I traveled to work in several states, before being drawn to the amazing outdoor lifestyle that Washington State has to offer. I have owned and operated Harmony Physical Therapy since 2007. I have experience with all age-groups (0-100+). Over the years I have been employed at outpatient clinics, inpatient rehabilitation, home health, pediatric rehabilitation, school districts and developmental programs.
My search to find therapy techniques that successfully and holistically treat the mind and body lead me to John F. Barnes Myofascial Release. This approach to healing has changed the way I practice physical therapy by focusing on finding and treating the cause of my client's pain, not just symptoms, resulting in a more permanent healing of body and mind. This is not traditionally available in our current medical system, but I have found that the healing power that true Myofascial Release therapy provides is so profound, that it should be readily available to all humans.
Fascia is a continuous web-like fluid system of connective tissue that is found throughout the entire body. Fascia permeates and surrounds all organs, nerve pathways, vessels, muscles, bones and cells. It acts as the body’s shock absorbing mechanism, a communicating system between all cells and protection of the body and emotions during trauma. When the body experiences injury, trauma, disease, surgery, poor body postures or dysfunctional repetitive motions, the fascia hardens, locks down, becomes dehydrated and does not move. These solidifications in the fascia system can create intense pressure on vital structures, which eventually causes these body parts to lose their ability to function.
When gentle pressure is sustained at a fascial barrier long enough to allow energy transfer, softening occurs, and the traumatized tissue can be returned to a healthier state. The results include improved blood flow to areas, improved range of motion, elimination of subconscious holding patterns, decreased pain and restored function.
